A New Toy for Pluto? ~ A Memorable Moment at Chef Mickey's

This article was originally written for my WDW Daily News column, Making Magical Memories. It was published in newsletter #211 on December 20, 2011.

We kicked off our most recent trip to Walt Disney World with breakfast at Chef Mickey’s, which turned out to hold one of the funniest memories of our vacation. Just before heading to the Contemporary, we had stopped at the gift shop at Disney’s Polynesian Resort.  Hayley was immediately drawn to a large Stitch stuffed animal.  I have no idea why, since she has never seen anything with Stitch in it, but we purchased it for her anyways.  Clearly she loved it and “needed” it.  We’ll just call that impulse purchase #1 of many!  She decided that Stitch just had to come to breakfast with us.  At first, I wasn’t sure this was a good idea, since following breakfast we were heading straight for the Magic Kingdom, which would most likely mean I would be carrying Stitch all morning!  Luckily, I decided against my better judgment and allowed her to bring Stitch along, because he became part of one of my favorite moments from our trip.

As soon as we were seated at our table at Chef Mickey’s, Hayley was ready for the characters.  Before leaving home, she had drawn pictures for Mickey and Minnie, who of course loved the special gifts from Hayley.  When Pluto came to our table, she realized that she had nothing to give to Pluto.  Her only option was to hold up her new Stitch and show it to Pluto.  As any good dog would, Pluto grabbed a hold of Stitch, put him in his mouth and began to shake it around like it was a new toy.  Though all of us saw this as hysterical, Hayley let Pluto know that Stitch was not a dog toy but her friend.  Once she was able to grab Stitch back from Pluto, she picked up her napkin and began to wipe Stitch off, as if he were covered in dog slobber.  She then gave Stitch a great big hug as if he had been traumatized by the incident with Pluto.  Hayley was quite relieved when Pluto reached over and patted Stitch on the head.  She then said, “Pluto, you are a great friend” and gave him a big hug.

This is one character interaction that Hayley is still talking about weeks later.  Even better, the Stitch that I thought would soon be forgotten and found somewhere in the toy box is now one of Hayley’s favorite toys.  He has even had plenty of adventures here in New Hampshire too, since Hayley takes him everywhere!

What is one of your favorite character moments?

That is a great #Disney magical moment.  I love how she interacted back.  It's fun to watch the silent conversations.

My kids love Chef Mickey's.  Though they all have their favorite Disney movies, I am pretty certain that the Fab 5 are their favorites.  I will be sharing another story of what Joey brought to Chef Mickey's as gifts for the characters.  It's things like this that make my whole vacation! :-)

Thank you, Ariel! Hayley sleeps with that Stitch every night and brings him everywhere she can.  She has even been trying to sneak him into her backpack for school, but luckily he is too big! :-)

Hi! I know this post is old, but how big is your stitch plush? I am looking for a specific one and the one your daughter has might be it. Thanks!
