Goofy's Beach Club Character Breakfast at Cape May Cafe

Before having children, it never occurred to me to experience a character meal.  I honestly thought it was just for kids.  But after our very first character meal, we realized what a mistake we had made never experiencing one before. Even my parents couldn't believe all the years we had missed out on such fun.  In 2006, my husband and I decided it was time to take Joey, just 14 months at the time, to Walt Disney World for his very first trip.  We figured the best way to kick off this particular vacation would be a character meal.  I researched all our choices, and decided that breakfast at Cape May Cafe at Disney's Beach Club would be it.  Our group included my parents, my brother, sister-in-law, my husband, Joey and myself.

The moment we arrived at Disney's Beach Club, I loved it!  The decor, the landscaping and the view were just beautiful (this started my desire to stay at the Beach Club, though that is still  on my Disney bucket list!).  We checked in and walked around the lobby to take it all in, while we waited for our table to be ready.  There was a small sitting area for the kids with a TV playing some Disney cartoons.  Joey was content to sit in one of the little wicker chairs and enjoy the show.

When our table was ready, we walked into Cape May Cafe and I immediately saw Minnie in her beach clothes.  I could not wait to start taking pictures!  Our server was Katie, and to this day is one of the cast members who really stands out as just magical.  She explained to us how the characters would make their way around and also gave us the layout of the buffet and where to find things.  She made sure she was constantly checking in on Joey to make sure he was comfortable with the characters and who hadn't been to the table yet.  She made an already exciting experience even better for all of us.  When we were getting ready to leave, she told us to wait a minute because Goofy wanted to say bye to us.  She returned moments later with Goofy and put us in position for a great family photo, which she took herself.  To this day it is a favorite of mine from that trip and sits right in our family room in one of my favorite Disney frames.

We headed to the buffet, which had so much to choose from (you can view the menu at All Ears), and the characters, dressed in their beach clothes, started arriving.  First was Chip, who quickly became Joey's favorite.  They played peek a boo and gave each other lots of hugs.  Next came Goofy, who was sweet enough to let Joey squeeze his nose a few times and he didn't seem bothered by the bits of Mickey waffles Joey left on his nose.  Minnie made her appearance next and gave all of us lots of hugs and was her usual sweet self.  Last to come to our table was Dale.  Like Chip, he was so playful and fun that Joey spent much of the time smiling and slapping Dale five. Joey loved each of the characters and had such special interactions with them.

Since this experience, we have gone to Cape May Cafe for breakfast every trip.  There have been some changes since then, but we still love it.  Chip and Dale no longer make their appearance at Cape May, because Donald Duck has taken their place.  I have found that this is one of the quieter character meals we've experienced, and we have never felt rushed.  Our character interactions have been more than just posing for a picture, they have been special moments between my children and Minnie, Chip, Dale, Goofy, and Donald.  Actually, our most magical Disney moment took place at Cape May Cafe (you can read about it in my post Disney Magic at Work Again).

We have been to Goofy's Beach Club Character Breakfast several times and have never been disappointed.  Even better, as soon as we finish eating, we can take a boat or walk into Epcot through the International Gateway or take the boat to Disney's Hollywood Studios.  It is a great way to start any Disney day!

Which character meal is your favorite?

When thinking of characters meals, this one hasn't come to mind. We have a reservation for Chef Mickey's for our trip next month. It's my kids' first trip and of course, Chef Mickey's comes up all over the place as far as Travel Channel Shows and the planning DVD. Every time my daughter sees it she says she wants to go there whenever we "finally go to Disney" (she doesn't yet that's we're going). I, on the other, hand would prefer the quieter, more relaxed setting for these interactions so I will definitely have to remember it for our next trip! Thanks for sharing!

We love Chef Mickey's too, but it definitely is busier and louder than Cape May. We have only done Chef Mickey's for dinner, but I am hoping to test it out for breakfast this upcoming trip. Besides, I love the Beach Club! Now to save enough money to actually stay there one of these years!

That's awesome!! We thought about Cape Mays for my Sept trip, but since it's so short we decided to do an in the park character dining. Plus I want to wait to do Cape Mays with Jonathan and both boys, not just the little one! As of now, my favorite character dining is Garden Grill at the land! I miss Liberty Tree Tavern having characters. :(

Thanks, Deb! Joey is now 6.5. It is suddenly hitting me how quickly he has grown up because it seems I have shared a lot about him and his first trips!

Beth - We haven't tried Garden Grill, but I really want to. I can't convince my family on that one for some reason. But I too miss Liberty Tree Tavern. I loved the costumes!! It is odd though that Chip and Dale went from three character meals to now just one. They are so fun!

I love the character breakfast there too. Me and my mom went there in October 2006 a rescheduled trip from December 2005. We live in New Orleans and had to reschedulde due to Katrina. When we sat down Goofy came to our table and wrote on the paper on the table where are you from and I said New Orleans. He wrote "House Ok". It brought tears to my eyes. Even after 4 years when I see the picture or tell someone that story it make me cry. The cast members at Disney are really that special. That is why Disney is my "Happy Place"
